Sutton Park is a picture-perfect example of an early Georgian estate, situated in the village of Sutton-in-the-Forest just 8 miles north of York. In the BBC’s Gentleman Jack, it features as the home of neighbouring heiress Anne Walker, who heroine Anne Lister falls for. You’ll likely recognise the sumptuous ‘Chinese room’ in particular, with its magnificent Rococo plasterwork, gilt mirrors and feminine pink soft furnishings – it features in some of the rendezvous scenes between the two Annes.
Sutton Park was built in the 18th century by Thomas Atkinson for Philip Harland and is now the family home of Sir Reginald Sheffield and his wife, Lady Sheffield. The Sheffields once lived at what is now Buckingham Palace and when they bought Sutton Park in 1963, much of the art collection that came with them was from there. Although the Sheffields still reside at Sutton Park, the Grade I-listed estate and its wonderful grounds are open to the public.
