Allerton Castle

Allerton Castle

The spiky, gothic revival glamour of Allerton Castle has made a dramatic backdrop for numerous TV and film sets. Now a Grade I-listed building, it was built in the 1840s for Lord Mowbray but there’s been a country mansion on these grounds since the 11th century. Its popularity as a filming location is partly due to the immense variety of rooms and period styles that can be seen within, and it has featured in productions including ITV’s Victoria, the BBC’s Sherlock Holmes – The Sign of Four, and the 2020 feature film Say Your Prayers.

Inside, the grand oak-lined hallway and gilt-embellished furniture are a throwback to the era in which the castle was originally decorated. Outside, there are 200 acres of North Yorkshire countryside and wonderful formal gardens to explore – some of the scenes from The Secret Garden were filmed here. Allerton Castle has also played host to The ABC Murders (BBC One), Location, Location, Location (Channel 4), Europe’s Strongest Man (Channel 5) and the Bollywood films 1920 and Shandaar, among others.
