Dramatised again and again because of its enduring appeal, The Secret Garden has been brought to life with a new ambitious vision in this 2020 retelling of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s classic novel. The film follows orphaned Mary Lennox as she loses herself in the mysterious Yorkshire home of her strict uncle Archibald Craven (played by Colin Firth) and discovers the secret garden behind an overgrown door. Filming took place across the nation but the raw, brooding beauty of North Yorkshire played a key role in evoking the atmosphere of the novel. Important filming locations included Helmsley Walled Gardens and Duncombe Park estate in Helmsley, the Unesco-listed Fountains Abbey and The North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Yorkshire is the setting for 'The Secret Garden', and we were so keen to film there. We could not have been more thrilled with our time in God’s own county! We filmed around the North York Moors, including the Duncombe Park estate, Helmsley Walled Garden, Rievaulx moor, the Roman Road near Goathland, and the North York Moors heritage railway. We also spent a memorable day at Fountains Abbey.
