Justifiably popular with day trippers, the small village of Malham is a bucolic rural enclave in the Dales national park and one of Yorkshire’s prettiest attractions. The village itself has a babbling stream running through its centre, a huddle of classic stooped stone houses and a lovely village pub, but its reputation is compounded by the natural beauty spots on its doorstep. Location scouts have fallen for its many charms and it’s one of the filming locations for the new All Creatures Great and Small.

There’s been a village here for a thousand years and in the Doomsday Book its name is given as Malgun, meaning “settlement by the gravelly places” – a nod to the geological marvel of Malham Cove. This limestone amphitheatre, within walking distance of the village centre, was formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age more than 12,000 years ago. For centuries it was rightly regarded as one of the natural wonders of England. The dramatic limestone pavement just above the cove is a recognisable location from productions such as Wuthering Heights, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Trip.

To the east of the village is Gordale Scar, an impressive limestone gorge, and Janet’s Foss, one of the area’s most picturesque waterfalls and another filming location from the new All Creatures Great and Small.
