Yorkshire’s dramatic coast has a stirring role to play in this feature film starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a haute couture dressmaker from 1950s London. The plotline follows Reynolds Woodcock (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) as he develops a controlling relationship with a waitress he meets in a seaside hotel during an impromptu trip to his country retreat.

The scenes based in the country were filmed across North Yorkshire, including in Lythe, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay near Whitby, and at Grosmont Station along the North York Moors Railway. The North York Moors National Park’s coastal clifftops by Ravenscar provided a windswept coastal backdrop for brooding scenes with Reynolds and Alma, who becomes his muse. Released in 2017, Phantom Thread was Daniel Day-Lewis’ last film before he officially retired.
