There is a wonderful mystique about Janet’s Foss, a waterfall in the middle of the woods that gushes over a limestone outcrop and plunges into a deep pool. The natural basin is sometimes visited by wild swimmers and in All Creatures Great and Small (clip below) it features in a scene where Helen catches James Herriot swimming in the woods. It has also hosted feature films such as Clio Barnard’s Dark River.
In real life, the woodland setting is even more magical than its on screen appearances would have you to believe. Local folklore says it’s home to Janet, queen of the fairies, who lives in a cave behind the falls. Janet’s Foss is accessible via a footpath from Malham that forms part of the ‘Malham Landscape Trail’, often described as one of England’s best hikes. Walking here presents a perfect opportunity to explore the picturesque surroundings before taking your cue from Herriot and entering the waters for a quick paddle.
