Yorkshire’s wealth of well-preserved heritage attractions was brought into technicolour focus during the filming of the much-loved period drama Downton Abbey. The worldwide hit TV series aired on ITV from 2010 to 2015, following the fortunes of the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs servants at a Yorkshire country estate. Downton then delighted fans when it debuted on the big screen in 2019, spectacularly showcasing Yorkshire filming locations including the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Little Germany in Bradford and Dalton Mills in Keighley. While Highclere Castle in Berkshire continued to serve as the key country house location, Harewood House was featured in the film as a royal destination though the ballroom scenes set there were in fact filmed in Wentworth Woodhouse.
