The Personal History of David Copperfield is Charles Dickens for the 21st century. This clever and unique 2019 retelling of the Victorian classic from Armando Iannucci stars Bafta award-winning Dev Patel alongside other British talent including Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw and Paul Whitehouse. For filming, they used the cobbled streets, Georgian backdrops and traditional pubs of Hull Old Town as a convincing stand-in for 1840s Dickensian London, where David Copperfield (played by Dev) is bombarded by the poverty and wealth, wickedness and kindness of Victorian England as he struggles to find his way in life.
