A treasonous spy and a glamorous journalist – in Walmington-on-Sea? When the classic British comedy Dad’s Army returned to our screens in 2016, of course it brought the classic Dad’s Army TV wartime capers with it. This time it also brought a stellar, award-winning British film cast for the big screen, including Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Courtenay and Michael Gambon. Led by Captain Mainwaring (played by Toby Jones), the story follows Walmington’s dispirited Home Guard at the tail end of World War II.
Film makers found a perfect double for wartime Britain in the Yorkshire seaside town of Bridlington. Over seven weeks between October to December 2014, the production crew transformed the cobbled streets of Bridlington Old Town into an authentic setting for Walmington-on-Sea, while North Landing at Flamborough Head formed the backdrop for Walmington Beach. Other filming locations used include Bempton Cliffs, Scarborough Sea Front, Leeds Town Hall and The North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
