The Stripey Badger

The Stripey Badger bookshop was transformed into G F Endleby, Grocers for Channel 5's All Creatures Great and Small

There’s bags of old-fashioned charm about the Stripey Badger bookshop on Grassington’s main square, which is why it caught the eye of the All Creatures Great and Small filming crew. As part of the transformation of the Dales village into James Herriot’s ‘Darrowby’, the Stripey Badger played G F Endleby Grocers.

Throughout the series, books in the shop window were temporarily replaced with pre-war food packaging and the shopfront was given a 1930s-era paint job. It is now back to the usual business of selling books and welcoming visitors to the adjoining café. If you are planning a visit, drop by to pick up a souvenir edition of one of James Herriot’s beloved books.

All our books were replaced by fruit and veg during the filming of All Creatures Great and Small. I wish we had a pound for every time a customer came in through the door and asked for a bunch of carrots! The café was transformed into a house and became something of a Green Room, where actors would congregate between takes, enjoying hot drinks and catching up. We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the whole experience and were also impressed by the care taken with the animals - the lovely pony in the market square had someone holding an umbrella over its head when it rained!
