Deep in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the traditional feel of the 13th century Green Dragon Inn, with its flagstone floors, oak beams and atmospheric charred hearth, made it the perfect stand-in for the interior of The Drovers Arms in the new All Creatures Great and Small. In episode 1, it is here that James Herriot receives his initiation into country life. It then makes further appearances in episodes 4 and 6.
The pub is situated in the charming Yorkshire village of Hardraw, whose name means ‘Shepherds’ dwelling’ in old English – a fitting filming location for the beloved classic series about a country veterinarian. Beneath the rising tops of Great Shunner Fell, the inn stands in a stunning location overlooking Upper Wensleydale on The Pennine Way, and England’s highest single drop waterfall, Hardraw Force, is just a stone’s throw away.
The waterfall can also be seen in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, with the location featuring as the backdrop for the famous bathing scene.
